October 31, continued...

Ok, so no chicken for dinner. After eating my grapes, I had about 100 pumpkin seeds which my boss bought in, so addictive.

Lee and I decided to be un-Halloween like (it happens when you live up two flights of stairs) and go out for a pint, which turned into me having a Montreal smoked meat sandwich that came with chips. Shamefully, I hate most of my chips, as my sandwich was... well, served on a dinner roll. Hardly a sandwich at all, right?

31 October, 2011

Trying something new today, blogging from my new app on my new phone, let's see how we go.
Breakfast was half a grapefruit and a hot black coffee.

Lunch was soba noodle soup, followed by a Daisy cupcake! Too cute and way too delicious. Dinner will be chicken but will update on that later....

30 October, 2011

Had poached eggs for breakfast, nice and early.

We then head off to double spin. Because we were there 15 mins early, and there is a 15 min gap between the classes, we ended up spinning for two hours. Niiiiice!

I met Lindsay from the volunteer group at the FoodBank for lunch and some much needed recipe book discussion & revision, we went to Princess Cafe which I haven't been to before. I had a turkey sandwich on multi-grain, and it came with a pickle. Again, niiiice! There was some spinach and tomato packed in there, and some pesto. Delicious. And reasonably priced. Double whammy.

I have a new phone and I am still not used to resizing the phone photos, they are a random size, so apologies for the lack of consistency in formatting. Yes, I have noticed, no, I haven't been bothered to work it out yet.

Dinner was steak, of course. Defrosted it, and glad I did. I also made the onion gratin again, because I had all these onions left over. Yeah... thats why... yummmmmm.

I also made the shiitake soba noodle soup for lunches for the next few days. Dang I love this soup.

October 29, 2011

Bit of a sleep in, and I shamefully skipped breakfast, seems like the theme for Saturdays lately.

Lunch was something different, we were at the mall, and the food court food was not appealing to me at all, except a crepe place.... So I had a chicken salad crepe, and it looked like this:

And I have to say, all things considered, it was really good! Bit of a surprise really.

We had a full on day shopping and wandering around aimlessly, so a much needed pint was in order. I 'may' have had a few pints when we decided to eat there, and we both had chicken wraps. Bit like lunch really.
We also fell mouth open upon some maple cookies later in the evening, whoops. And that was it for our Saturday.

October 28, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast, glad I had the slice I didn't eat yesterday, I thought I was going to explode at about 10am.

For lunch my colleague Ingrid and I went to the Mongolian Grill, she had a coupon so we ate and had bottomless soft drinks for $6 each, included tax & tip. Not bad at all! I packed mine full of chicken and pork, with cabbage, onion & mushies. And then, overloaded on spice with 'crazy pepper' (cayenne), chilli flakes, chilli sauce, and Mongolian hot sauce. Oh my god, too much food. The afternoon was very uncomfortable!

Wasn't hungry until later, I didn't have anything defrosted, and we could't really go anywhere, so we ordered pizza later on. From a place we hadn't had before, because they had 'thin crust'. Honestly, I don't think Canadians know what a thin crust is. Anyway. We didn't eat it all, and it was a bit average, so probably not really worth it. I was in a bit of a shitty mood, and the pizza wasn't helping. Next time salad me thinks....

October 27, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast, and a strong black coffee, then off to work. New phone was dead so no alarm was set, which meant we missed spin. Meh! Went after work instead.

Yesterdays dinner leftovers for lunch, which was awesome, and a mango & grapefruit salad with almonds. I had some 'healthy slice' but didn't eat it, I didn't need it, so saved for tomorrow.

Dinner was leftovers from the last few days, we had chicken & pork, spinach wraps, and some salad stuff. Very low effort, which is exactly what we needed. Another day, another blister, eh?

October 26, 2011

Berries & yogurt for breakfast, which again was good, then off to work.

I nibbled on some oat slice in the morning, and had yesterdays soup for lunch. Managed to eat a chocolate at work in the morning, not sure why I did it, I guess it was just there....

Daisy at work (who I now call Daisy Cakes) made the most adorable piggy cupcakes! So I ate one.
Seriously Daisy, open a store already! Don't choose HR!

Was starving by dinner time, I made rissoles and potato salad. The potato salad was nearly as good as the usual one, but without thomy mustard and my good friend aromat, it wan't quite the same. But it was still pretty good.

Will add pictures later, was a hearty meaty potatoey meal, always welcome!

October 25, 2011

Early morning spin, then ate a small tub of berries and yogurt with some walnuts & maple syrup. Oh and the ground flax seed.

Lunch was meant to be soup, but it was my bosses birthday so we went out instead, which was nice. I ordered a chicken and avocado wrap with bean sprouts, it was meant to be on bread but I asked for it to be wrapped, and it was actually really nice. They forgot the pesto though. Bastards! It came with sweet potato fries, I didn't get through them all (thankfully).

I had made some pulled pork yesterday, so we had porkadillas for dinner, they looked like this, and were delicious on the spinach tortilla:

And there 'may' have been a couple of tim tams left. All I can say is, there aren't any more....

October 24, 2011

Breakfast of berries & yogurt with some flax seed and walnuts. Yum yum.

I made some 'healthy slice' over the weekend, the one with the dried fruit, oats & spices, so had a bit of that before lunch.

Lunch was the trusty soup, made cauliflower and broccoli soup over the weekend too. Then finished it off with some snow peas and hummus. No photo required really, as it was the same as a couple of days ago.

Dinner was really good, chicken salad with avocado, bacon & spring onion. It's looking a little flat, I would normally go to some sort of effort but I was too hungry and tired to worry about that!

And... well confession time. We had tim tams in the house, and so I ate three. And they were good.

October 23, 2011

Sorry, playing catch up again, its been a busy few days.

So on Sunday I skipped breakfast, which isn't healthy I know, and we went out for lunch. Reason we went out was because unfortunately the wild boar sausages were in the freezer, I thought they were in the fridge but I was wrong. They were meant to be lunch, but became dinner instead.

For lunch we went to the Moose, and we both had pizza. Mine was 'Mediterranean', basically a pesto base, caramelized onions, feta and prosciutto. Lee said it looked like Mordor, as it was really really dark, it looked almost burnt. But it was pretty tasty.

So dinner, yes, wild boar sausages. They were maple garlic ones, and they were gooood. We had them in buns with cheese and mustard. Of course. And ate some left over onion gratin.

Not the healthiest day but a tasty one!

Meaty Challenge - Ostrich Fillet

So! Where do I begin....

Ok, planning this challenge was hard. I had so many ideas, and many involved pancetta and proscuitto, but that makes me a bit predictable. I love wrapping meat in proscuitto! (WE KNOW screams the crowd). I was thinking berries, prosciutto, and roasting.
When we got to the ostrich farm, we found that they only sell frozen meat. So I went with fillet steak rather than fillet roast, to make sure it had time to defrost.  I already decided to serve it with onion gratin, roasted small potatoes, beans, mushrooms with a red wine sauce (thanks mum, you have such fab ideas!). What I didn't realise until last minute is that the mushrooms and red wine sauce would merge, and become something a little... outstanding.
So back to the difficulty of the 'challenge', it turned out to be not so much of a challenge at all. This is not the first time this has happened, but to be honest, the only 'challenging' piece of this exercise was sourcing the meat. Not to be confused with saucing the meat. See what I did there?

First, the onion gratin. Four red onions, light sour cream, garlic, thyme, white wine, and my favourite thing on the planet... Gruyère cheese. And parmesan. So I mixed up the garlic, onion and thyme to start, with a little olive oil. I ripped off a Jamie Olive recipe for this, but realised something quickly, his recipe has a major fundamental flaw. He didn't use enough cheese. Jeez Jamie, go easy on the olive oil, and add more cheese, how hard is it?!
Anyway, I roasted in a hot oven for a bit, covered in foil. Then removed foil, and chucked it back in to caramelize. Then added the sour cream and the cheese. Unlike Jamie, I chucked everything I had in it on the cheese front...Ridiculous.

Meanwhile, I was prepping the sauce. I soaked some dried porcini mushrooms in boiling water, and left them for about half an hour.

I then chopped em up, and used the liquid for the base of the sauce, and reduced by about half before adding red wine, and... well, some sugar. What can I say, it needed to be sweet and the berries were not here.

I had this simmering in the background for a spell, while I did other things, like prepped the potatoes, which I par boiled, then shook 'em round in the empty pan with some olive oil, and some (Australians, please don't judge me) chicken salt. Yes, thats right, chicken salt. But more on that later.

So I prepared the defrosted fillet. It had a big dirty bloody vein right though it so I had to get to work and sort that shit out. No one likes a big dirty vein in their meat, do they? To be honest this bit of meat reminded me of liver. And it kind of turned me off. Initially.

So the thing about ostrich is that its amazingly lean, and takes no cooking time at all. Plus, it doesn't shrink. What the...? So I cut this into two, and at the last minute, while everything was coming together, I chucked them on the hot skillet, with some salt and pepper, and olive oil (as instructed by the chatty lady at the farm).

They took 3 mins one side, 2 the other, and I took them off to rest under a strategically cut piece of aluminium foil. While that was resting, I steamed the beans and snow peas, and served up, balancing the rested ostrich fillet on top. More on the potatoes? The chicken salt rocked the party. Seriously. You cant make this stuff up.

And after a few bites?

I said it before... ridiculous. I was worried about the sauce, it wasn't as glazed as I would have liked, but oh dear, it was bloody delicious. Potatoes rocked, the crunchiness of the hot peas/beans were amazing, it added a contrast to the meal I wasn't expecting but pretty proud of. And the gratin? The gratin?! THE GRATIN WAS AMAZING!

So really, a pretty easy meal, with some timing talent, and rather impressive at the same time. This was a pleasure to cook and even more so to eat. I would highly recommend this to anyone, ostrich is sensational, so easy to cook and so lean. We will be visiting the farm again me thinks. Soon.

Ok, well thanks for those who voted and stuck with me to get here, apologies for the delay with the challenge.  Until tomorrow, where everything goes back to normal... (or does it... stay tuned).. peace out. xx

ps thanks mum for your help with the brainstorming. Sometimes my lastminute.com organising pays off :)

October 22, 2011

So this morning breakfast wasn't really breakfast. We shared a banana and a granola bar. I know, right? What were we thinking?

We head out to the ostrich farm for the cooking challenge fillet, it was about a 40 minute drive, and was actualy really nice to chill out in the car, kind of like a mini road trip. The lady at the ostrich farm was definitely a chatter, we were there for about 25 minutes longer than we needed to be, but she was a lovely lady and we can see another visit, very soon... But more on the ostrich and the wild boar sausages that I haven't mentioned until right now later.

We then head to Oakville, we had a couple of 'shopping' requirements and Lee took me to where he bought my handbag for my birthday. You see, I fell in love with some shoes and had to check them out... what am I doing... this isn't a fashion blog, its a food blog! So moving on.

For lunch we ate at the food court, I had a spicy chicken wrap, and it was actually pretty good for food court food.

I cant imagine it being as healthy as the place (not so rightfully named Fit for Life) boasts, but still, rather satisfied.

Before dinner we snacked on some snow peas and some hummus. While cooking dinner. As for dinner? Well, that's a whole post of its own... tbc. I do have to mention though, messaging my friend Heather today, I told her I was already planning our next catch up meal. She said thats great, she is planning the next catch up drinks! Then made a crack about having a 365 Days of Booze blog for 2012. You can tell you have a friend for life when they come up with shit like that, haha :)

xx

October 21, 2011

Had yogurt with berries, ground flaxseed and almonds for breakfast:

I call this 'his and hers', haha! You can tell its dark in the mornings now, eh. Still, much prettier when the snow comes, and now that I am all 'booted up', I'm ready!

Lunch was sushi again, with Lee. This time he had the Red Bull, I went for the Dynamite Roll, which had a bit too much tobiko (fish roe) than I could handle... Still yummy though, and good value - $8.95 for this, salad, glass noodles & miso soup. Bargain.

We went for a cheeky pint after work, which turned into us sharing some nachos. And thats all we had, shame on us. Next stop... cooking challenge!

October 20, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast. Lunch was soup followed by hummus & snow peas:

Pretty hungry by the time dinner came around, made hamburgers, was meant to be rissoles and salad, but we had them in buns. With cheese. Avocado. And of course, bacon jam. And they were good....

October 19, 2011

Bit of an interesting day today. I worked from home as I had an appointment over lunch with an naturopath.

I had half a grapefruit for breakfast, and a bowl of broccoli & bacon soup for lunch. The naturopath was... well, interesting.  Will tell you all about it when I know more, for now its just 'try this, do that, we will see in the test results...' etc.

I got hungry about an hour after soup time, so did Lee. I ate one of his lunch rolls with smoked meat and horseradish mustard. YUM. Still, shouldn't have had the roll but options are slim pickins at home right now.

So dinner... dinner was meant to be rissoles, but unfortunately the beef had not defrosted in time. And there was nothing else in the house. And Lee and I were both starving, and to be honest, a little on the grumpy side. So, Lee being the hero that he is went and got us a pita each. Job done, but not quite the dinner we were expecting.

We really do eat pitas too often eh...

October 18, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast, then a sneaky chocolate at work before lunch as I was starving. I really need to work on the snacks front to stop me from eating chocolate or girl scout cookies...

My team went out for lunch, we went to Milestones which has just opened up not that far from work. I had the Milestones Californian salad, which was mixed salad with chicken, spicy candied pecans & strawberries with goats cheese:

It was really really good. I love Milestones.

When we got home last night I made a simple dinner - tomato and cucumber salad with olives, roasted zucchini and chicken breast with Italian herbs. And it was good.

But later, I had the biggest hankering for dessert. We dont normally have dessert, but I thought stuff it, and made pastries with blueberries, raspberries & banana. Smothered with maple syrup. It was insane. From now on I am smothering everything in maple syrup.

Time to get back on the straight and narrow. Tomorrow's visit to the naturopath should be interesting. I am doing a food allergy test as well as well as an initial consult. Let's see if they do more than the 'no wheat no dairy' thing, while trying to sell me expensive supplements. Will let you know how it goes...

October 17, 2011

Started the day with half a grapefruit, not exactly birthday food, but I made up for it later in the day...

I ate another one of those illegal girl scout cookies at work, I was hanging for lunch. Lee picked me up just before 12 and took me to a place my boss recommended, and had Rueben sandwiches (smoked meat, swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Delicious!)

The afternoon at work went by pretty easily, I am not a big fan of birthdays, let alone birthdays at work, but it was an easy pleasant day, I really like my team. I got to leave early, so again, Lee picked me up and whisked me away to the pub, where we accidentally stayed for a few and a burger, which was also illegal:

Can you believe they call this a junior burger?!

And that was it for October 17, 2011. A little on the calorific side but you only turn 32 once, right?

October 16, 2011

Totally skipped breakfast, which is illegal, I know.

Lee popped back from work to deliver me a chicken pita, which was awesome and didn't touch the sides. They were a bit smaller than usual but it suited me just fine.

In the afternoon I made steak and guinness pies for dinner and some broccoli and bacon soup for this weeks lunches. I call it broccoli and bacon soup, but it also has celery, cabbage, onion and zucchini in there. Bit of a fridge clean out...

The pies turned out a treat, had a small prosciuotto & olive salad to start, then hooked into these bad boys:

We were stuffed after this, was a really good pie!

October 15, 2011

Sorry, playing a bit of catch up here. I had posts written but not posted.

I had a mug of cereal for breakfast - sultana bran. I regretted it, as always, the milk played havoc in my stomach. I dunno what it is with the mugs of cereal, I think I have always done that, I just like it that way...

I had a delightful walk in the rain to the supermarket, its only a 5.2km round trip but felt like a lot longer. When I got home I made an avocado and brie sandwich which was really not satisfying, then moped around the house waiting for Lee to come home. I had a bit of... not homesickness... more family sickness going on. With my sisters and brothers hanging out with their kids, I really did feel a long, long way away.

Anyway, so by the time Lee finished work, I needed to get out of the house big time, so he took me to Boston Pizza for a pint and we shared a pepperoni and mushroom pizza. And some cactus cut potatoes with dip. And it was gooood. I was meant to make steak and mushroom pie, but the supermarket didn't have pastry, nor did it have the herbs I wanted, or anything else. Plus my meat didn't defrost on time, so it looks like they are on the menu for tonight :) Either way, our justification is its Birthday Weekend. We over did it for Lee's so damn it, we are going to overdo it for mine too!  One block of Lindt mint dark chocolate later....

October 14, 2011

Pretty crummy sleep for us both, and Lee is back on day shifts, so he dropped me off at my work just before 7am.  I ate this for breakfast:

It was greek yogurt with almonds and frozen raspberries. Well, they were not so frozen when I got to work, but were still teeth hurtingly cold. I really enjoyed it though.
I snacked on some chocolate in the morning, as I was starving. My team went out for sushi for lunch, I had the beef 'Red Bull' rolls I had last time I went with Lee. And again, it was delicious. Came with a glass noodle salad and a miso soup. Mmm.  I heart miso. In the afternoon I snacked on not one, not two but three mint slice girl guide cookies my boss bought. Argh!

I head to the gym after work, did a spin class then leeched off the closed cafe's free wireless until it was time to go meet Lee at his work. Its only a 15 minute walk, I tried to drag it out by dragging my feet a little but it was a bit crisp and windy, and after a shower I was shivering... a lot. I ordered us some food to pick up and take home, we were both too exhausted to cook or worry about anything. Originally I was going to order a pho, but ended up with a thai red curry. Whoops.

And there goes another day...

October 13, 2011

Breakfast was two ryvitas with grape jam. Ran out of grapefruit, and now officially out of ryvitas, whoops.

Lunch was a bowl of the cauliflower, cabbage and zucchini soup. I snacked on a few 'birthday' chocolates during the day, and head to spin straight after work.

By the time I got home I was starving, so while making dinner, I had a slice of toast with avocado and brie. Not the healthiest snack, but shit I was hungry!

Dinner was really good, grilled chicken breast, steamed corn on the cob (thats pepper, people, not dirt on my corn!) & salad of lettuce, tomato, olives & goats cheese:

It was pretty hefty, so we were both stuffed stupid afterwards. And that's Thursday done!

And the winner is....

OSTRICH!

What a great poll, thanks for those who voted, I really appreciate it!

Ok, so the hunt for ostrich fillet has begun. I have found an ostrich farm near by which can hook me up, but the problem is the store is only open during the day on weekends, and Lee works this weekend! I have made calls and visited some gourmet butchers (where I have seen it sold before) but alas, apparently it was a 'summer thing'. So the farm it is, and at least we know how fresh it is.

So, unfortunately, I am going to have to postpone this until next weekend, when Lee is off and can drive me out there. Geez, you would have thought I would have figured out this whole 'not having a licence' thing by now, right??

So stay tuned, it will be October 22 when the cooking challenge will take place.

October 12, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast, and a cup of coffee, then off to work.

I was starving at lunch and soup wasn't going to cut it so Lee picked me up and we had a chicken pita. And it was pretty good... until I got to what seemed to be an 'old' pepper, it was chewy, like cardbord, and it was too late by the time I noticed. The thing was damn spicy too, kinda ruined it for me! Still the rest was pretty good.

For dinner we went to the Keg (I know, seriously, what are we like?!) and we both ordered pepper steaks. Mine with asparagus, and we shared a side of mushrooms.
I was really disappointed. My steak was so fatty and chewy, and the asparagus was overcooked. I was like 'whats the point in coming out when I can do better at home for a third of the price?!'. But still, we had a good relaxing time. Its been hard on Lee being on shift, so we tend to make up for it all at once. Time to calm down a bit I think! Especially as neither of us were prepared for steak disappointment.

Because about a third of my steak was fat, and therefore left on my plate, I ended up snacky later on. I had some toast with avocado, cranberry and brie. And it was good. But probably a little over the top...

October 11, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast then off to work. I was peckish by 10am and there were donuts and muffins - I opted for a cranberry muffin, and wished I had the donut, it was a bit rank...

Had a left over turkey patty wrapped in proscuitto for lunch. By itself. And it was HUGE. I needed a knife and fork, which left me wondering how the hell we ate the turkey burgers yesterday?!

I failed to mention 'birthday chocolates' which I was given by my work. Everyone gets a box of chocolates on their birthdays. So I have been having the odd chocolate snack here and there. I ate two yesterday....

After work we went out for dinner, its Oktoberfest and we have been missing the whole thing (you have to buy tickets). So Lindsay (the girl from the FoodBank) suggested we go on a night were most is closed, go to the restaurant for dinner. It might have been loud with 'zigga zagga' style ooompapa music, but it was still fun, and made us wish we had have bought tickets months ago! Both Lee and I had the weiner schnitzel (pork), which came with 'German potato salad' that tasted strangely familiar although lacking in the pickle department, and some veg:

And I gotta say it was pretty good. I demolished it, and the bread roll it came with. Shame on me! I only stopped to have a sip of beer. Felt pretty German, I gotta say. Lee and I also met the chef outside, nice man. Probably wont go back until October next year.

When we got home we finished off the pumpkin pie. Back to the gym for us!

October 10, 2011

Half a grapefruit today, then some proper lunch anticipation, which was soup, so while it was yummy, it was a bit of a let down.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving today, so I made turkey burgers and pumpkin pie.  I will start with the pumpkin pie, as I made that first. I had no idea what I was doing, I was kind of following a recipe which didn't make much sense, but it came out sensational.

Dont get me wrong, I know it doesn't look like much and we didn't have our hopes up at all. But this thing was quite amazing. Though the pastry needs work.

The turkey burgers were huge. I made the patties out of turkey, oats, onion & worcs sauce. I normally grate zucchini into the mix but we are all out (I accidentally used the last zucchini in the soup... whoops). I then wrapped the patties in prosciutto:

I cooked them in the iron griddle, then lovingly placed sliced brie on top at the end of the cooking duration to allow some meltage action.

Served them on thin buns with avocado and cranberry sauce, and a side of corn on the cob:

Lots of photos of the burgers, right? Well, we felt they were that good, they deserved the air time! In the traditional Thanksgiving spirit, we are stuffed to the eyeballs and don't really need to eat any more turkey until Christmas time. Happy Thanksgiving, Canadians! As for you yanks, enjoy yours in November :)

October 9, 2011

Half a grapefruit for breakfast, a bit late, around 10am. Lee slept soundly while the noisy neighbours were doing some sort of construction out there, no idea how he managed to sleep through it! And there I was tiptoeing around the house, trying to not be noisy but naturally, making loads of noise in doing so.

I made some more soup, had some left over cauliflower, cabbage & zucchini, and thought, hell, why not.

Turned out much nicer than I thought it would, even if it is thick, green and tastes healthy! Was really good for lunch. Loads left over for lunch tomorrow... and probably the next day...

Dinner was chipotle pork loin. I didn't fancy much so I ate it in a sandwich, actually the thin buns that are meant for turkey burgers tomorrow. Looking forward to tomorrows cooking shenanigans, hopefully a much more interesting update.

October 8, 2011

Two spoons of greek yogurt mixed with granola for breakfast again. And it was good.

I had two poached eggs on toast for lunch, seems a bit boring but it was exactly what I wanted.

When Lee woke up we did some grocery shopping, then went for a pint, which was probably a bad idea considering he is still on night shift, but it was nice to have a beer in the sun together. We shared a spinach dip, which was essentially his lunch & my dinner. I snacked on some corn chips and salsa at a friends place afterwards.

Lee did a midnight maccas run and dropped off a cheeseburger for me, how sweet! Something was up with the maccas though, we both felt pretty ill afterwards. That'll teach us eh?

October 7, 2011

Early start today, again, but got a solid 8.5 hours sleep so happy with that. Had two spoons of yogurt with granola for breakfast, we are out of grapefruit. Was at work before 8, I have been working on something that well... wasn't working, and it was doing my head in. One of those things where once you start investigating, a whole bunch of other problems pop up. Once it was resolved, I think I pretty much gave up the rest of my day.

I took a salad in for lunch - lettuce, olives, chicken, pumpkin seeds and some goats cheese:

We were let out early today because we are moving offices, and its thanksgiving on Monday. I left just before two, and because Lee was sleeping, I decided to start walking. It was a beautiful day today, sun was shining, it was a warm 24 degrees, and my good friend the groundhog that lives near my work was out, so I stopped to talk to him for a bit. Also passed a lot of geese, talked to them too. I think Canadians reckon I am a bit of a nut job...

I made it more than half way where Lee met me, as soon as I got home, I went to sleep for two hours. It has just been one of those weeks. Woke up feeling a bit crappy, poor Lee was also feeling crappy, so we had a Harvey's chicken burger for dinner. And it was goooood.

Right now I am menu planning for thanksgiving on Monday. I am thinking gourmet turkey burgers and pumpkin pie. I have also had some inspiration on the gnocchi front, its been a while and I was reading an old friends blog (or collective blog from everyone in their household) http://www.310fitzroy.com/
I had some good house mates in my time, but this set up seems to be terrific! So maybe I will have a crack at gnocchi this weekend also. We will see.

Loving the results on the poll, still some time left to swing that vote folks! I am happy to cook anything that the meaty challenge throws my way, so its up to you lot. Peace out. xx

October 6, 2011

Had a terrible sleep. Ate half a grapefruit for breakfast, then rode my bike to work. It was dark, and freezing (2 degrees) so I wasn't a happy camper when I got to work.

Work... sucked. They had a pizza lunch, which naturally I choose not to eat (the whole wheat and dairy thing, at work it is not a good idea), so they ordered me a salad. I got asked while eating my salad if I was on a diet. Hint, much? I guess I haven't been eating that well lately so I better pull up my game.
The rest of the day sucked, really looking forward to this week being over.

I was starving when I got home, Lee picked me up after soccer and got me home, with enough time to spare to have a shower and go back to work. I hate night shift. Woe is me.

So my dinner was tomato, mushroom and goats cheese on rye toast.

And thats it folks. Not very interesting at all.

I have an appointment to see a dietitian at a naturopath in a couple of weeks, going to work out this food allergy thing once and for all. Tired of explaining this wheat dairy thing when I don't really understand it or its limits myself, and because I don't understand it, I keep having it. It's hard to avoid, and well, I like it!
Will keep yall posted.

October 5, 2011

Had a pretty crummy day. Started out ok, with the half a grapefruit, then a soup for lunch. This time I packed a small tomato salad, and when I say small, I mean five cherry tomatoes and three olives small. Still, it was good to have that lil' sommat extra.

I was doing a painful report, so had the chocolate hankering big time. I bought a kitkat, which disappeared the moment I looked at it, I swear it didn't touch the sides. It didn't cheer me up either.

Lee picked me up after work and I was in a fairly... uh... bad mood, I guess you could say. We went for a pint, which should be illegal, and ended up ordering a porkadilla from Ethel's, which was again, illegal, but still amazing. Always good to eat dinner before 6...?!

Naturally by the time 8pm came around we were both hungry. So we had baked beans on toast. We also polished off the last of the birthday cake.

Hopefully I will do better today... gotta stop my day influencing my eating habits...

October 4, 2011

Bit of a boring day, had the half o'grapefruit for breakfast and then nothing until cauliflower soup for lunch.
It was good, but not sure its enough food... I got home and I was famished, so Lee and I had a small piece of left over birthday cake, which was a great snack but hardly healthy.

Dinner was good though, Lee cooked maple & sage pork loin with roasted asparagus & tomato. Problem was, there was too much meat and not enough veg, so was rather hungry after dinner, but didn't want to load up on meat. So instead we ate some edamame. Mmmm.

And that's it for October 4. Only three months left of blogging, can you believe it? Well... this blog anyway...
And the next food challenge has had a massive turn around, check it out! If you haven't voted on my meaty challenge, please do. Looks like ostrich is going to be the winner, but a week ago I thought that about lamb shank pie. Now pork belly is a possibility, who knows!

Happy Birthday Lee!

Poor bastard didn't even get to sleep in on his 30th, instead he had to get up and drive me to work! I had half a grapefruit for breakfast, and that was it until lunch.

I had cauliflower & pancetta soup for lunch, which looked like this:

And it was gooood. It doesn't have any dairy but still has an almost creamy quality, although I left it rather chunky, we both like it this way. And it was really filling, so exactly what I want from a soup.

Lee picked me up from work, and we came home for a piece of cake before heading out again.

We were meant to go bowling but I think energies low from weekend aftermath, we went for a bite to eat instead. And when I say bite, I mean a belly full. We have been meaning to go to Hogtails for quite some time, so Lee turning 30 was a good excuse as any. I had something called the Nashville Style Hot Chicken... something. And it was bloody huge:

It came with corn bread and two sides, I tried to choose two lower offenders - baked beans and coleslaw. I took one bite of the corn bread, it was good but I didn't have room. The beans had bacon in them, usually a dream come true, but I wasn't the biggest fan.... at least the slaw was not so creamy.
Lee went with beef brisket, which was also huge. Neither of us came close to finishing, and rolled out of there feeling a bit too stuffed. Well, birthday shenanigans are over, so back on the gym bandwagon. Hope you had a wicked birthday (weekend) Lee. xxx
